A home remodeling marketing agency builds demand you own, while Angi, HomeStars and Houzz rent you demand that stops the day you stop paying.
Both models can work. A lead site fills a slow week quickly. An agency, meanwhile, builds the pipeline that makes slow weeks rarer in the first place.
This guide compares the two on cost, control and what each one leaves behind after twelve months. It is written for renovation and remodeling companies in Canada and the United States.

How the lead marketplaces actually work
Angi, HomeStars and Houzz all sell attention. You pay to appear in a category and a service area. Then you pay again when a homeowner asks for a quote. The platform owns the homeowner relationship, and you rent access to it.
Shared leads and the race to respond
On most marketplaces, one enquiry reaches several contractors at once. As a result, speed beats craft. The remodeler who calls back in four minutes usually books the appointment, even when a better firm calls at noon.
That dynamic also pushes prices down. Homeowners compare four similar quotes and choose on number, because nothing else tells the four companies apart.
What changed at Angi
Angi rebuilt this model in 2025 with homeowner choice, which lets the homeowner pick which pros receive their details. The effect was dramatic. In its Q2 2026 results filed with the SEC, Angi reported US network service requests down 55% and network leads down 54% since that change, alongside revenue down 11% year over year.
Read that as a warning about dependence rather than a verdict on the company. Above all, it shows that the rules of a rented channel change without your input.
What a home remodeling marketing agency does differently
An agency works on the other side of the ledger. Instead of buying access to someone else’s audience, it builds yours.
Assets you own
The output lives on property you control: your website, your Google Business Profile, your review history, your project photo library and your email list. Nobody can switch those off. In addition, they keep working between campaigns.
Google’s own local ranking guidance names three signals behind map results: relevance, distance and prominence. Two of those three respond directly to work an agency does every month.
Channels that compound
Local search, reviews, project content and email all get stronger with age. Paid ads do not compound, although they do fill the gap while everything else builds. Our guides to construction SEO and Google Ads for contractors explain how the two fit together.

Twelve months later: what each approach leaves behind
The clearest way to compare the two is to ask what you still have after a year of spending.
| Question | Lead marketplaces | Marketing agency |
|---|---|---|
| Who owns the homeowner relationship? | The platform | Your company |
| What happens when you stop paying? | Enquiries stop that week | Rankings, reviews and content remain |
| Is the lead exclusive? | Usually shared | Yours alone |
| Where do your reviews live? | On the platform profile | On your Google profile and site |
| How fast does it start? | Days | Days for ads, months for search |
| Who controls the rules? | The platform | You |
The market is large enough for both
Demand is rarely the real problem. Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies expects annual US homeowner spending on improvements and repairs to reach $518 billion by the end of 2026, with year-over-year growth easing to about 1.6%.
Canada tells a similar story. National renovation investment climbed from roughly $19.5 billion in the second quarter of 2025 to $23.3 billion a year later, according to Statistics Canada figures reported by Wood Industry.
Project sizes matter too. The 2026 US Houzz & Home Study put the median renovation spend at $20,000 for 2025, while the top 10% of projects reached $150,000 or more. Kitchens led at a $24,000 median.
In other words, the difference between an average job and a great one is enormous. Marketplaces are built to deliver the average. A home remodeling marketing agency should be built to deliver the top decile.
When a lead site still makes sense
- You are new, have no reviews and need work this month
- You have crew capacity sitting idle in a soft season
- You want to test demand for a new service or a new city
- You can answer the phone within minutes, every time
- You treat the spend as a stopgap rather than a strategy
When to hire a home remodeling marketing agency instead
- Your cost per booked job from marketplaces keeps climbing
- You compete on price because homeowners cannot tell you apart
- You want larger projects, not more small ones
- Nobody in your company owns marketing week to week
- You would like to stop paying and still get enquiries
Not sure which side you fall on? Our post on seven signs you need a marketing agency works through it, and what renovation contractors should look for in a remodeling marketing agency covers how to compare firms.
How to run both without wasting money
Most remodelers do not need to choose today. Instead, run them together and shift the budget as the owned channels mature.
- Track every enquiry by source, so you can compare cost per signed job rather than cost per lead.
- Claim and complete your Google Business Profile before you spend another dollar on leads.
- Ask every marketplace customer for a review on your own Google profile as well.
- Fix your core business listings so search engines and AI assistants describe you correctly.
- Reduce marketplace spend by a quarter each time an owned channel replaces that volume.
Finally, keep the customer list. An email list of past clients is the cheapest source of repeat and referral work a remodeler will ever have.

Frequently asked questions
They solve different problems. Angi can deliver enquiries within days, while an agency builds search rankings, reviews and content that keep producing after the spending stops. Most remodelers run both and shift budget toward owned channels over time.
Most marketplaces send a single homeowner enquiry to several contractors at once. Because four companies are quoting the same job, response speed and price often decide the winner rather than quality of work.
Paid ads and Google Business Profile fixes can produce enquiries within weeks. Local search results usually take three to six months, so plan to overlap both channels for at least two quarters before cutting marketplace spend.
Brand Builds plans start at $2,100 CAD a month, about US$1,500. Ad spend is normally budgeted separately, and larger multi-market programmes cost more because more channels are running at once.
Only indirectly. Those reviews live on the platform profile, not on your site. Ask the same happy customers for a Google review as well, because prominence on Google is one of the signals behind map pack results.
