How to choose a construction marketing agency: 8 questions to ask before you sign

Hiring a construction marketing agency? Ask these 8 questions first: industry focus, who does the work, what you own, pricing, reporting and exit terms.

The right construction marketing agency understands how your buyers buy, shows real results from companies like yours, prices its work clearly and lets you own everything it builds. A generic agency can make a nice website. However, it may not know what a submittal is, why a GC’s bid list matters or how a homeowner picks a renovator. That gap costs you months and money.

Use the eight questions below before you sign with anyone, including us.

Specialist or generalist: why it matters in construction

Construction, design and hardware companies sell in ways most agencies never see. A window manufacturer needs architects to specify its product. A trade contractor needs general contractors to invite it to bid. A renovator needs homeowners to choose it over three other quotes. Each path needs different marketing.

A specialist construction marketing agency already knows this. It speaks your buyers’ language, knows the trade shows and associations, and has seen what works in your market. As a result, you skip the months you would otherwise spend teaching a generalist your business.

8 questions to ask a construction marketing agency

1. Who else in construction, design or hardware do you work with?

Ask for examples from your part of the industry. A company that markets restaurants and dentists is not the same as one that markets millwork shops and general contractors. Look for case studies with names, numbers and timelines. You can also check independent reviews on sites such as Clutch.

2. How do our buyers actually buy?

A good agency will ask you this before it pitches anything. Listen for questions about who signs, who influences the decision, how long the sale takes and where leads come from today. If the first answer is “more social media posts”, keep looking.

3. Who will actually do the work?

Some agencies sell with senior people and deliver with juniors or distant freelancers. Ask who writes, who designs, who runs the ads and who you will speak to each month. Then meet those people before you sign.

4. What will we own?

You should own your website, your domain, your Google Business Profile, your ad accounts, your analytics and your content. Get this in writing. If an agency keeps these in its own name, leaving becomes painful and expensive.

5. What does it cost, and what is included?

Ask for a clear monthly price and a list of what it covers. Watch for vague “strategy fees” and extra charges for basic changes. Many good agencies now publish starting prices. For example, you can see ours on our pricing page.

6. How will you report results?

Clicks and impressions are not results. Ask how the agency will track calls, form enquiries, quote requests and, ideally, signed work. A monthly report should fit on one page and tell you what happened, why it happened and what comes next.

7. What happens in the first 90 days?

A good construction marketing agency can explain its first three months clearly. Typically that means an audit, quick fixes and then a plan for the channels that matter most. If the answer is “it takes a year to see anything”, ask what you will see before then.

8. How do we leave if it isn’t working?

Long lock-in contracts protect the agency, not you. Ask about notice periods, what happens to your files and accounts, and whether there are exit fees. Confident agencies keep their terms short.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a construction marketing agency cost in Canada?

It depends on scope. A focused plan for search and your website might start at a few thousand dollars a month, while a full programme with ads, content and video costs more. Always compare the scope, not only the price.

Is it better to hire in-house?

An in-house marketer knows your business well but rarely covers every skill. An agency brings a whole team for less than several hires. That’s why many companies use both.

How long before we see results?

Quick fixes to your listings and website can help within weeks. Search rankings and content usually take three to six months to build.
