Decorative hardware marketing: the designer is the buyer, so market to her

A homeowner has no reason to prefer your pull over any of fifty others on the wall. It is a visual decision, and it is usually made earlier, by a designer working from a board. Brands that market to dealers, who market to nobody, end the chain there. Brands that market to the designer get specified by collection and finish, and the dealer fills the order with the brand intact.

Be on the board

Pinterest, Instagram, search, designer newsletters and sample programs are where collections get chosen. Hardware photographed in real rooms with real designers, credited, beats product on white every time. Collections organised by look, room, finish and centre-to-centre match how designers actually search.

Pull-through protects the dealer

Demand created with designers and homeowners arrives at the showroom asking for you by name. That is the opposite of channel conflict, and it is the only argument that survives a category review on price. MAP limits discounting, which was never a brand message anyway; design credibility and being findable at the moment the board is made are untouched by it.

Own the relationship without breaking the channel

A direct relationship with the end customer can capture the homeowner and route the order to the nearest dealer. A designer program with samples, spec sheets and MAP-safe trade logic, tracked in a CRM, tells you which designer specified what and which dealer filled it.

What to do this quarter

  1. Reshoot one collection in real rooms and pin it by room and finish.
  2. Launch a simple designer sample program with a spec sheet for every SKU.
  3. Give dealers a pull-through kit: displays, planogram support and co-marketing that sends demand to the counter.
