Contractor marketing in the GTA: how a trade contractor adds a third GC and keeps the first two happy

Two GCs are most of your revenue. Here is how subs build an independent name, get requested by name, and add direct owner work.

The concentrated sub is the most common company in Canadian construction and the least marketed. Two GCs are most of the revenue, the best work sits on the GC's website under the GC's name, and the owner is still estimating at nine at night. When one GC slows, forty percent of the year goes with it. Marketing, for a trade contractor, is mostly the work of reducing that dependency.

Get prequalified by owners who have never met you

GC estimators, developers, property managers and owners prequalify subs they can verify. A capability package they can download, scope, self-perform capacity, safety record, bonding and a project record, published under your own name, is what turns a phone number into an invitation. The photography and project records should start on the jobs you have right now, while there is work to show.

Will the GCs mind?

GCs expect their subs to have a website, a project record and a name. What they do not like is a sub who bids their client directly on a project they introduced, and nothing here does that. Direct owner work comes from owners who found you. And a sub with four customers is a sub the GC cannot squeeze on back-charges and schedule compression.

The moment you are not busy, it is already too late. Build the name while there is work to photograph.

Residential that pre-qualifies

Google Ads that produced tire-kickers and warranty calls are a targeting problem, not proof that marketing does not work for trades. Commercial terms go to estimating. Residential, if you want it, gets a separate path with a budget frame and reviews, so the crew is not racing to the bottom.

Recruitment is marketing too

A brand that is invisible to buyers is invisible to workers. Careers pages, crew content and campaigns for skilled trades and foremen fill the bench before the 2028 pipeline needs it.

What to do this quarter

  1. Build the prequalification package and make it downloadable.
  2. Photograph the three best jobs you are on right now.
  3. Run one LinkedIn and search campaign to owners, developers and GCs in your region, with residential filtered out.
