The trades are hiring in a market that likes them again.

Construction employment rose in July and public support for trades training keeps climbing. Recruitment is now a marketing campaign, and the best crews pick employers with a visible brand.

The Ontario Construction Secretariat reports construction employment rose in July while the sector's unemployment rate fell, and a new study finds public support for trades training rising. Good people have choices again. They research employers the way customers research brands, which makes recruitment a marketing job.

What happened

Employment in Ontario construction climbed in July as public opinion keeps warming to the trades as a career. More demand for the same skilled people means the contractors who look organised and proud online will hire first.

If you are a general or trade contractor

An apprentice checks your Instagram before your job ad. So does the journeyperson you want from a competitor.

  • Build the careers page like a landing page: real crews, real projects, pay ranges where you can, and a form that takes two minutes.
  • Post crew content weekly. The site walk, the topping-off, the new hire's first week. Authentic beats polished.
  • Reply to applicants the same day, with the same automation discipline you would give a sales lead.

If you build and develop

Your trade partners' capacity is your schedule. Employers of choice attract the subs of choice.

  • Show your sites, safety culture and payment reliability publicly, because subs pick builders too.
  • Celebrate your trades by name in project content. It costs nothing and they share it.
  • Partner with local colleges and pre-apprenticeship programs, and publish the partnership.

The part most companies skip

Recruitment marketing and customer marketing are the same asset: a brand people can check and believe. Build it once, and it hires and sells at the same time.

That was the free advice. The full plan is a conversation.
