SEO for general contractors: what to rank for when owners search at eleven at night

Construction marketing SEO is not about traffic. It is about being verifiable to the dozen owners and developers a year whose decisions fill your book of work.

A general contractor does not need a thousand visitors a month. It needs the right twelve people a year to find a firm they can verify: owners, developers, architects and public buyers who research privately before they invite anyone to bid. SEO for a GC is the work of being findable and credible in that moment, nothing more and nothing less.

What owners actually type

"General contractor" plus your city and sector, "design-build contractor", "ICI contractor", "commercial construction company", and the names of the project types you want more of. They also ask AI assistants the same questions. The pages that rank are the ones that answer plainly: what you build, where, at what scale, with which delivery methods, and what the record shows.

  • Project pages with contract values, delivery method, schedule performance and the owner's problem solved.
  • Sector pages for the work you want more of: healthcare, education, industrial, multi-residential.
  • A downloadable credentials package, with the download logged.
  • Google Business Profile and reviews kept accurate, the check every owner runs.

The project record is the content strategy

A finished building cannot explain your self-perform scope or your safety record. Structured project documentation makes the work speak, to people, to Google and to the AI tools owners now ask for shortlists. If the photography lives on a phone, the record does not exist.

Before an unfamiliar firm is added to an invitation list, somebody checks the website, the project record and the search results. At night. Without telling you.

Leading indicators first

Enquiries, rankings and credentials downloads move in months one to three. Invitations and awards pay out over six to eighteen. Report both, honestly, and treat the 2028 pipeline as the reason to start in the quiet.

What to do this quarter

  1. Write down the ten searches an owner would run to find a firm like yours, and check where you land.
  2. Publish three project pages with real data instead of a photo gallery.
  3. Put the credentials package online and track who pulls it.
