For years Canadian cabinet shops lost to cheaper imports on a spec sheet that made the two look identical. As of 31 July 2026 a 25% safeguard surtax applies to imported wood cabinets and vanities, a maximum 200-day measure with the Canadian International Trade Tribunal inquiry concluding 15 January 2027. Designers and builders are asking "are you domestically manufactured?" for the first time. Most shops have no way to answer where the buyer is looking.
Days 1 to 30: say it where they look
Canadian-made, NAAWS 5.0, AWMAC membership and site-fit reliability belong in the first screen of the website, in your voice, without fluff. A portfolio by room, construction and finish, shot properly, and a lookbook designers can download in two minutes replace the Dropbox link with inconsistent file names. Every enquiry starts being asked where it came from.
Days 31 to 60: reach the decider
Designer, builder and GC campaigns in your region. Search for Canadian-made cabinets and custom millwork plus your city. Pinterest and Instagram aimed at designers and buyers, not other shops. Commercial casework credentials, shop drawings, lead times and install record, written for the GC's estimator.
Capacity is temporary. Position for margin, not volume.
Days 61 to 90: build the pipeline that outlasts January
Full today does not mean full in February. The shops that use the window to build direct demand from designers, GCs and homeowners enter 2027 with a CRM full of relationships and follow-up that runs itself. Whatever the Tribunal decides, that pipeline stays.
The capacity objection
"We are already at capacity" is the best moment to raise the quality of what fills the shop next. Marketing while busy lets you choose your next work. Marketing from an empty floor happens at full price, in a hurry.
What to do this quarter
- Put Canadian-made and your standards in the first screen of the site this month.
- Build the lookbook system designers can actually use.
- Start the designer, builder and GC campaigns and log every enquiry in a CRM.
