Ask a building product manufacturer where the last year went and you will hear the same story: named as basis of design, then replaced at the submittal stage by a cheaper equal with paperwork that looked identical to a busy reviewer. Nobody knew until the order did not come. That is not a product problem. It is a marketing problem with a very specific shape.
The two-minute test
Put yourself at a spec writer's desk. Can they find your product by Division and section, filter by performance and application, download the cut sheet, the BIM object and the test report, and trust what they see, in under two minutes and without filling in a form? Most manufacturer sites fail at least two of those steps. Every failed step is a specifier who moves on to the competitor whose library works.
- Product architecture by Division, section, application and performance.
- BIM, CAD details, cut sheets and test reports indexable and one click away.
- Basis-of-design pages and comparison sheets built to survive a substitution review.
Content marketing for manufacturers is technical content
Your buyer is not on Instagram and does not want a blog about company culture. They want guide specs, application guides by assembly type, project case studies with performance data attached, and technical articles bylined by your engineers. That content ranks for the terms specifiers actually type, gets cited by the AI tools they now use to build shortlists, and gives your reps something worth sending.
Your tech data, BIM objects and cut sheets are not engineering paperwork. They are exactly what the specifier is looking for.
Know which projects you are on before the PO tells you
Every data-sheet download and BIM pull is a signal. Captured in a CRM and routed to the right rep, it becomes a project pipeline: specified, submittal, substitution watch, purchase order. The eighteen-month sales cycle stops being a black box, and the rep calls the right firm first.
What to do this quarter
- Run the two-minute test on your own site with someone who has never used it.
- Remove the form from in front of the documentation and add download tracking instead.
- Publish one comparison sheet for the substitution you lost most recently.
